Opening a legal case

Choose Legal, pick a template, set the jurisdiction, add the people who should see it, and upload the first documents. The Case Agent is ready as soon as the case exists.

Early access

The LexSalim application is opening in stages and is not yet available for public sign-in. This article describes how the workspace is designed to work for early-access members; wording and screens may change before general release.

A legal case is a workspace for one matter: a dispute, a contract review, a set of correspondence, a probate file. Keeping one matter per case is what makes the Case Agent reliable, because it only ever reads the documents in the case it belongs to.

Steps

  1. From the workspace, choose New case and then Legal.
  2. Pick a template that matches the matter, for example a contract dispute or general correspondence. Templates set sensible labels and a starting timeline; you can change anything later.
  3. Give the case a title and a short description of the facts as you understand them today.
  4. Set the jurisdiction. The core workspace supports matters in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Jurisdiction-specific research and templates are planned and are released per jurisdiction after verification, so a jurisdiction today mainly labels the case and shapes dates and terminology.
  5. Add parties: the people and organisations involved and their role in the matter.
  6. Add members: the people in your organisation who should see this case. Nobody else can, even administrators, until they are added.
  7. Create the case. It starts in Draft status.

What to do next

  • Upload documents. Contracts, letters, emails and exhibits go into the case's encrypted vault. See Uploading documents to a case.
  • Ask the Case Agent to summarise what you have uploaded or to build a first chronology. Everything it produces waits in the review queue for your confirmation.
  • Record events and deadlines on the timeline, or confirm the ones the agent proposes from the documents.
  • Move the case to Active when you are working on it.

Good habits

  • One matter per case. If two disputes share documents, upload the shared documents to both rather than merging the cases.
  • Name documents clearly before uploading; the names appear in findings and references.
  • Keep the description current. The agent uses it for context, and so will anyone you add later.

Remember that LexSalim organises and prepares. It does not advise, represent you or file anything on your behalf.
